POPPIN’ THE CORN

Summer 2025

All you from the Great Midwest: remember the old adage “Knee High by the 4th of July”? That meant the year was going to see a good seed corn crop. Well, agrarian science, GMO, HT, BT and whatever else has sure blown that one up. Here was the more or less “knee high” corn field when I took a country road bike ride in early June when the Daylilies were blooming (who said ditch weed can’t be pretty):

Well, now in mid-July the corn is tall and full and tasseling and the crop looks amazing. Makes sense with a leap in bushels per acre from around 90 in the mid ‘70s to over 200 last year. Here is Sue taking a break from our 2 rider peloton a few days after the 4th to check the corn growth off a peaceful country road in West Central Illinois.

We gotta watch out for the blind corners earlier and earlier every year! Progress, I guess!

PS: For you west central folks, I hear there are some amazing BBQ rubs in a big display at the Farm King store in Macomb:
